Impetigo is a skin infection that is extremely contagious and commonly seen in children and infants, but adults can get it too. It is an infection caused by bacteria, and it spreads very easily. If anyone comes in contact with this bacteria then it results in getting red sores, especially around the nose and mouth.

Types of Impetigo

There are two main types of impetigo

Non -bullous impetigo – This impetigo symptom can begin with the appearance of red sores usually around the nose and mouth.

Bullous impetigo – The symptoms of bullous impetigo can begin with the appearance of fluid-filled blisters which can be mostly seen on the central part of the waist, neck, arms, and legs.

Causes of Impetigo

The most common cause by which you can get impetigo is bacteria called ‘Staphylococcus aureus’ Another bacteria source is group A Streptococcus.

These bacteria lurk everywhere. You can also catch impetigo if you share the same clothes, bedding, towels, or other objects with someone with the infection.

Symptoms of Impetigo

  • Red sores around nose and mouth.
  • High fever and swollen glands.
  • Sores can be itchy and painful.
  • Ecthyma, a type of impetigo results in causing painful fluid or pus-filled sores that turns into deep ulcers.

Prevention of Impetigo

  • Bath and wash your hands often to cut the chances of having skin bacteria.
  • Cover any skin wounds or insect bites to protect the area.
  • Keep your nails clean or clipped.
  • Change bed linens, towels, clothing that come in contact with the sores often.
  • Don’t share any personal items with anyone who is dealing with impetigo.
  • Always clean and disinfect your surroundings.
