Erectile dysfunction(ED) is also known as impotence is a type of dysfunction in which the penis is not able to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. It is seen that about 1 in 10 adult males suffers from erectile dysfunction on a long-term basis. Erectile becomes more common when you are getting old, as it is the natural part of aging. ED can not be considered normal at any stage. ED can be related to other problems which interfere with sexual mates, such as lack of desire, ejaculation problem, or problems with orgasm. 

Causes

There are many factors affecting your vascular system, nervous system, and endocrine system that can cause or contribute to ED. the following health-related factors and behavior which may cause ED.

  1. Smoking – The people who smoke excessively had a 60% higher risk of getting erectile dysfunction, as compared to men who never smoked. As smoking disrupts blood vessels.
  1. Drinking too much alcohol – During sexual intercourse, the brain sends the message to the penis to get erect, so if any person is affected by alcohol or drugs can slow down or intersperse those signals between the brain and body which causes ED. 
  1. Stress – Stress may trigger an increased production of stress hormones and a lower level of testosterone which plays a role in your sex drive. Stress can also impact your self-esteem and feeling of desire.
  1. Obesity/overweight – A person who is obese or overweight can get ED, as obesity may cause damage to the blood vessels and can cause a decrease in testosterone level. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia can damage blood vessels that are associated with obesity.
  1. Endocrine disease – If you have any kind of endocrine disease then it can cause you to experience erectile dysfunction (ED). The body’s endocrine system produces hormones that regulate metabolism, sexual function, reproduction, mood, and much more.

  1. Watch your weight – Sometimes those extra pounds can be the reason for your erectile dysfunction. If you are obese then obviously you are more likely to get high cholesterol levels and diabetes, which may lead to erectile dysfunction.
  1. Mediterranean diet – It is said that erectile dysfunction is interrelated to heart issues. If you take a heart-healthy diet then it will be beneficial for your erection as well as your heart disease. Avoid full-fat dairy products, fried foods, and red meat. Eat green vegetables, fresh fruits, and fish.
  1.  Quit smoking –  Smoking is one of the main causes through which you can get ED. Men who smoke are likely to have an erection problem as compared to the ones who don’t smoke. Smoking basically narrows the blood vessels.
  1. Get exercise – By doing regular exercise can give you the ultimate results in your sex life in lots of ways. As exercise keeps your body active, physically fit, keeps your weight in check, and lowers stress. And a study shows that if a person is just doing a walk for 30 minutes can lower their chances of getting ED.
  1. Proper sleep – It is very important to have proper sleep. As there is a link between sleep disorder and erectile dysfunction according to research. So if you take an ample amount of sleep then you may see improvements in your erection problems as well.
