Laughing Death

You all must be thinking that even laughing can kill someone? So the answer is yes. Laughing death is very unusual and rare. It’s a fact that laughing is an excellent therapy for improving mood and attitude and avoiding stress, but laughing too hard could be dangerous. Laughing itself doesn’t kill, but a condition triggered by laughing might lead you to danger.

Effects of laughing too hard -:

Asthma attack –  Asthma symptoms can be triggered by various emotions such as laughing, crying, stress, and excitement. If a person is experiencing asthma then a hard laugh may lead to a severe asthma attack.

Gelastic seizures – This is a condition in which unusual electrical activity takes place in the part of the brain and causes forced and uncontrolled giggling or laughing. A person who is facing this seizure may always appear to laugh, smirk, or laugh.

Suffocation – Laughing too hard can cause death because it may lead to suffocation or asphyxiation, as laughing too hard can make people difficult to breathe.

Syncope – Syncope may be triggered by heavy coughing and laughing. Basically, syncope is caused by a low heart rate or low blood pressure. People dealing with heart problems are unlikely to tolerate intense laughter as a faulty heart might not be able to handle hard laughter.

Ways in which laughter can kill someone -:

Laughing is said to be the best medicine. But sometimes this medicine can take someone’s life too.

1) Aneurysm – Aneurysm is excessive localized swelling of the wall of an artery. Laughing increases the pressure inside your cranium, which directly puts stress on an aneurysm ( an overfilled water balloon sitting next to the important parts of the nervous system). If you laugh too hard it may get ruptured and you probably may die.

2) Chronically ill –  People who are dealing with chronic disease have a higher rate of laughter death.  People with congestive heart failure or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)  don’t have that much room to spare in terms of lung volumes so that’s why it is very difficult for them to handle hard laughter.

When to seek medical help -:

Laughing can cause severe problems in certain people. You should visit a doctor if you develop any unusual symptoms before or after a laughing fit.

  1.  Severe headache – Laughing too hard can cause headaches before or after hard laughter.
  1. Dizziness – Hard laughing can also cause dizziness because laughing hard slows down the heart rate and puts pressure on the chest and abdomen which makes it difficult for the blood to return to the heart from the lower part of the body which causes dizziness or loss of consciousness.
  1. Difficulty in breathing – Difficulty in breathing can be seen in asthma patients. Hard laughing can trigger asthma symptoms and cause difficulty in breathing.
