Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a common ‘sexually transmitted infection (STI) ‘which is caused by bacteria named as ‘chlamydia trachomatis’. People suffering from chlamydia don’t feel any outer ward symptoms in the initial stages, but if you do get symptoms then they usually appear in between 1 and 3 weeks after having unprotected sex with an infected person.
Causes
- It can transmitted by unprotected oral, vaginal or anal sex with someone having chlamydia.
- It can be passed on through genital contact.
- IT Can happen if someone came in contact with infected semen or vaginal fluid.
Symptoms
Chlamydia doesn’t generally show any symptoms. So people may not realize that they have it. About 70% of women and half of all men with chlamydia don’t notice any symptoms. but If you have then it will appear in between 1 to 3 weeks.
The common symptoms are -:
(In WOMEN)
- Pain when urinating
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Pain in the tummy or pelvis
- Pain during sex
- Bleeding after sex
- Bleeding between periods
(In MEN)
- Pain when urinating.
- White, cloudy or watery discharge from the tip of penis.
- Burning or iching in the urthera (tube that carries urine out of the body).
- Pain in the testicles.
- If left untreated , infection can cause swelling epididymis.
Complications
Chlamydia can be associated with:-
- (PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE (PID)
It is an infection of uterus and fallopian tubes causes pelvic pain and fever. PID cause damage in the fallopian tube , ovaries and uterus.
- (Infection near testicles)
Chlamydia can inflame coiled tubes located apart from each testicles.
- (Prostate gland infection)
It can spread to man prostat gland and prostatitis cause pain during and after intimacy , lower back pain
- (Infection in newborns)
Chlamydia can pass from the vaginal canal to the newborn during delivery.
- (Ectopic pregnancy)
It happens when fertilized egg embed and grows outside uterus, in fallopian tube. To prevent life threatening complicaton pregnancy needs to be removed.
- (Infertility)
People who don’t show any signs or symptoms can cause blemish and obstruction in the fallopian tube and make women infertile.
- Reactive arthritis
People suffering from chlamydia trachomatis have a high risk of getting reactive arthritis. It effect the joint , eyes and urethra
Prevention
- Use condoms
- Avoid multiple sex partner
- Get regular screening
- Avoid douching
- Using a DAM ( thin soft latex )
- Not sharing sex toys
