Obesity

Obesity is a disorder in which a person has excess body weight or body fat that might affect their health. It occurs when an individual intakes more calories than is burned by physical activities and exercise. Many people relate obesity with being overweight, But these two are different terms. Obesity means having too much body fat, whereas a person may be overweight from extra muscle, bone, or water as well as too much fat. Obesity isn’t just a cosmetic concern. It is a medical problem that may lead to different medical issues like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Types of obesity -:

  1. Food obesity – This type of obesity is the most frequent in the world. Intake of excess sugary and fatty foods may lead to food obesity. If you have to lose weight, you should reduce your eating and exercise by at least 30 minutes a day.
  1. The thickness of the nervous stomach – This type of thickness is caused by anxiety, stress, and depression. People with a nervous stomach have a habit of eating sweets. The most important thing to avoid a nervous stomach is to control stress and anxiety with physical activities.
  1. Gluten diet – Mostly it is seen in the women at adolescence, menopause, and those with hormonal imbalance. It is very important to avoid long sitting, smoking, and drinking alcohol. 
  1.  The thickness of inactivity – People who play sports, do exercise in the past face this type of obesity. In this type, obesity affects parts of the body that have been very active in people who play sports.

Causes of obesity -:

  1. Physical inactivity – The most crucial cause which leads to obesity is physical inactivity, people who don’t perform any type of physical activity or any exercise may have a high risk of becoming obese. Sedentary people burn fewer calories than active people.
  1. Overeating – Overeating leads to weight gain, especially in people who take a diet that is high in carbohydrates, fats, and sugar. 
  1. Genetics – A person may develop obesity if one or both parents are obese. Genetics also affects hormones involved in fat regulation  
  1. Frequency of eating – Obesity is also dependent upon how often you eat. People who eat small meals 4 to 5 times daily have lower cholesterol levels or more stable sugar levels than people who take 2 to 3 heavy and large meals.

Symptoms of obesity-:

Obesity is diagnosed when your BMI(body mass index) is 30 or higher. 

  1. Difficulty in sleeping – People who are obese may loss their sleep.
  1. Cancer – Obesity can also lead to certain types of cancers as well, like prostate and bowel cancer in men, breast and uterine cancer in women.
  1. Osteoarthritis – OA can be seen in obese people, specially knee and hip joint pain, and lower back pain.
  1. Shortness of breadth –  This symptom is very common in people who are obese.
  1. Gallstones – Being overweight or obese make you more likely to develop gallstones. Obese people have higher level of cholestrol in their bile, which can cause gallstones.

Preventions-:

  1. Consume healthy food rather than eating sugary and fatty foods.
  1. Eat plenty of dietary fiber.
  1. Engage in regular exercise, and aerobic activity.
  1. Encourage children to drink water rather than beverages with added sugar.
  1. Aim for an average of 60 to 90 mins or more of moderate to intense physical activity 3 to 4 days each week.
  1. Limiting television time, screen time, and sit time.

Treatment-:

The best way to deal with obesity is by consuming a healthy diet, with a balance of regular exercise.

  1. Do activities like fast walking, jogging, swimming, or tennis for 150 to 300 minutes.
  1. Eat slowly and avoid situations where you know you could be tempted to overeat.
  1. Join a dance class, as dancing is one the best physical activity for losing weight.
