It is an infection caused by a fungus, this is called ‘Ringworm’. It is a common infection of nails and skin. People having this problem have to deal with itchy, red, circular rash. It is also known as “tinea” or “dermatophytosis”.
Types of Ringworm
The most common types are:
Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)
This is a common type that can occur on the feet and in between the toes. This type can be occurred because of sweating, not drying the feet after swimming, or after taking a bath.
Jock Itch (tinea cruris)
It is a type that is more common in men as compared to women. This type occurs in the genital area. It is hard to cure.
Scalp Ringworm (tinea capitis)
It occurs on the head. This type is very contagious but rare in adults.
Nail Infection (tinea unguium)
It is an infection that occurs in the toenails and sometimes in fingernails too. It causes deformed and discolored nails instead of rashes.
Body Ringworm (tinea corporis)
This infection can occur anywhere on the body or face. But it is common in skin folds.
Causes of Ringworm
Ringworm is extremely contagious. You can catch it in any of the following ways :
- From another person – You can get it from skin to skin contact.
- From your pets – Rubbing or grooming your pets can also give you ringworm. So wash your hands when you’re done.
- By touching objects – The fungus that causes it can dawdle on the surface, clothes, towels, etc.
- From soil – If you stand barefoot on the sand which is infected with a fungus that causes ringworm, then you can get it too.
Symptoms of Ringworm
- Red itchy, or scaly patches, or raised areas of skin called plaques
- Patches that develop blister or pustules
- The nails may get thicker or discolored or they may begin to crack in dermatophytosis
- In tinea capitis, the hair around it may break or fall off, and bald patches may develop
Prevention of Ringworm
- Keep your skin dry and clean
- Wear slippers in a public shower or locker room
- Change your socks and underwear on a daily basis
- Don’t share clothes and towels
- Wash hands after playing with pets
Home Remedies to Treat Ringworm Infection
- Soap and water
- Apple cider vinegar
- Coconut oil
- Tea tree oil
- Turmeric
- Aloe vera
- Oregano oil
In some cases, ringworm won’t respond to home remedies, or OTC then you should visit a doctor and he will prescribe you an Antifungal topical ointment or an oral medication.
