Scabies is very common all over the world and it can happen to anyone. An itchy skin condition that is caused by microscopic mites called Sarcoptes scabiei. These mites burrow into the skin which results in itching. 

Extreme itching occurs in the area where the mite burrows. Desire to scratch may be especially strong at night.

It spread quickly in crowded conditions, where people have skin to skin contact. Also, there are many chances of it spreading in hospitals, child care centers, and nursing homes.

What are the causes of Scabies?

  • The main cause of scabies is tiny, eight-legged mites.
  • These mites are so small that a person can’t see them on his/her skin but they can certainly see their effects.
  • These mites live on the top layer of a person’s skin and from it these mites feed themselves.
  • Female mites lay eggs and these mites release their waste on the skin by which the skin reacts and a person develops a red, itchy rash.

What are the symptoms of Scabies?

  1. Itching – Often extreme and usually worse at night.
  2. Rash – When a mite burrows into the skin it forms lines or burrow tracks.
  3. Sores – This occurs in that area where a person has scratched at the skin. The open sores can lead to impetigo.
  4. Thick crusts – This occurs when hundred to thousands of mites and mite eggs are harbored within skin crusts, causing severe skin issues.

How to prevent Scabies?

  1. Avoid direct skin to skin contact.
  1. Wear clean clothes.
  1. Avoid sexual contact.
  1. Avoid sharing clothes or bedding with an infected person.

What are the home remedies to Treat Scabies?

  1. Tea tree oil – It can help alleviate some of the itchiness associated with Scabies.
  1. Aloe vera – It is known for its soothing effects on sunburn and other skin ailments.
  1. Neem – Neem is an oil that has analgesic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  1. Turmeric – Some evidence supports the effectiveness of Turmeric in treating Scabies and some people claim that it helps in alleviating the symptoms.

What is the medical treatment for Scabies?

Medication commonly prescribed for scabies are:

  1. Permethrin Cream – This is a topical cream that contains chemicals that kills scabies mites and their eggs.
  2. Ivermectin (Stromectol) – Doctors may prescribe this oral medication for people who have crusted scabies. Ivermectin is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing, or for children weighing less than 33 pounds.
  3. Crotamiton – this medication is available as a cream or lotion which can be applied once a day for two days.
