A vaginal Yeast infection, which is also known as candidiasis is a common condition. A vagina contains bacteria and some yeast cells, but when there is a change in the balance of bacteria and yeast, the yeast can multiply. This causes intense itching, swelling, and irritation.

It is not considered a sexually transmitted infection (STI). You can get a yeast infection from your sexual partner. To prevent the infection, it is advisable to use condoms and dental dams.

Causes of Vaginal Yeast Infection

A naturally occurring microorganism ‘CANDIDA’ is found in the vaginal area. LACTOBACILLUS bacteria keep check in their growth.

There are several more factors that can cause a yeast infection.

  • Antibiotics 
  • Pregnancy
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Weak immune system
  • Poor eating habits
  • Stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Hormonal imbalance

Symptoms of Vaginal Fungal Infection

  • It can cause irritation and itching in the vagina and vulva.
  • A burning sensation while urinating.
  • Redness and swelling of the vulva.
  • Vaginal rash.
  • Watery vaginal discharge.

Prevention of Yeast Infection

  1. Avoid unnecessary antibiotics use, such as for colds or other viral infections.
  1. Avoid Douching, which removes some of the normal bacteria in the vagina that protect you from infection.
  2. Avoid tight clothes.
  1. Avoid wearing tight-fitting pantyhose.
  2. Maintain proper hygiene.
  3. Avoid things with added sugar.
  4. Avoid too much Tea/Coffee.

Home Remedies of Vaginal Yeast Infection

  1. Greek Yogurt – It can be considered a probiotic as it has live bacteria, such as lactobacillus acidophilus. These live bacteria are very essential to create a normal environment in your vagina.
  1. Boric Acid – is an antiseptic that is said to be very effective in treating yeast infection that is resistant to other remedies.
  1. The Essential Oil of Oregano – look for oregano which is made from wild oregano, or origanum Vulgare, as it contains two powerful antifungals ‘thymol’ and ‘carvacrol’.
  1. Coconut Oil – coconut oil is acquired from the flesh of the coconut. Coconut oil has many health benefits, including antifungal properties.
  1. Vitamin C – it helps to boost your immune system, a strong immune system allows your body to bring itself back into balance. Vitamin c also has antimicrobial components, so it helps when women add it into their diet to treat candida overgrowths.

Treatment of Yeast Infection

  • A single dose of an oral antifungal drug or antifungal cream for one to two days cures the mild infection.
  • Complicated infections need longer-term treatment.
