What is Measles?

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases for humans. It is a viral infection that appears in the respiratory system first and then spreads to the other parts of the body. It is caused by a virus from the paramyxovirus family. It is an airborne disease that can be transmitted through respiratory droplets, small aerosol particles. An infected person can spread it into the air when they cough or sneeze, particles can settle on surfaces and objects too.  

Types Of Measles

  1. Standard Measles – It is also known as red measles or hard measles and it is caused by the RUBEOLA virus.
  1. German Measles – It is also known as RUBELLA, it is entirely a different illness that is caused by the rubella virus which has a milder infection as compared to standard measles.

Causes Of Measles

Measles is caused by a viral infection, which replicates in the nose and throat of an infected child or adult. When a person with measles coughs, sneezes or talks then their infected droplets spray into the air, where other people can inhale them and can get infected. Measles can happen to any age group but commonly found in children.

Symptoms Of Measles

Measles isn’t just a rash. Measles can be dangerous for children and babies.

  1. Measles Infection Symptoms -:
  • High fever (can reach up to 104)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose 
  • Red watery eyes
  1.  Koplik Spots -:
  • Tiny white spots can appear inside mouth
  1. Measles Rash-:
  • Small raised bumps may appear on top of flat red spots.
  • Spots may occur on the whole body.
  • When a rash appears a person’s body temperature can spike to more than 104.

Prevention Of Measles

  1. Practice good health hygiene
  2. Wash your hands before eating,touching face and nose
  3. Don’t share personal items with ill people
  4. Don’t share eating utensils,drinking glasses
  5. Avoid people who are sick.
  6. If you are suffering from measles,then stay at home

Home Remedies Of Measles

  1. Take it easy – Take rest and avoid busy activities
  1. Sip something – Drink plenty of water, have juice and herbal tea
  1. Rest your eyes – If you or your child finds bright light bothersome,then keep lights low or wear sunglasses.
  1. Seek respiratory relief – Use a humidifier to relieve cough and sore throat.

Treatment Of Measles

  1. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  2. Rest to help boost your immune system
  3. Plenty of fluids
  4. Vitamin-A supplements
